Always verify local rules before visiting. Shore Find lists publicly accessible sites, but access, permits, and collection limits are set by state and local agencies. This page is a starting point, not legal advice.
General collecting guidelines
- All sites listed are publicly accessible at the time of writing.
- Respect posted signs, park hours, closures, and private property boundaries.
- Collect only loose material; never dig into cliffs, dunes, or protected banks.
- Take only what you need, and record the location for your own journal.
State & site highlights
South Carolina
A free SCDNR Hobby License is required to collect fossils below the low-tide line. Collection above the high-tide line generally requires landowner permission. Check the latest SCDNR regulations before your trip.
Maryland — Calvert Cliffs
Cliff excavation is prohibited. Collect loose fossils on the beach only, and stay well away from the base of the cliffs for safety.
Florida — Peace River
Fossil collecting is for personal, non-commercial use only. A Florida Fossil Permit may be required depending on where and what you collect. Review the Florida Museum of Natural History guidelines for current requirements.
Living & modern finds
Some sites include modern shark teeth and shells. Living wildlife, nesting areas, and cultural artifacts should always be left undisturbed.
